The Center has extensive practical experience in a variety of settings. We have collaborated with the Science Museum Minnesota and the City of St. Paul to conduct a scenario-planning workshop with a variety of civic stakeholders to explore climate change adaptation and community resilience. We have convened US utilities to explore the changing context of their business given the explosion of new devices connected to the electricity grid. Internally at ASU, we work to hone the capacity of scientists and engineers to consider the broader societal implications of their inventions. For instance, the Center has choreographed cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral dialogues into presymptomatic diagnostics, solar to fuel, carbon capture, wastewater sensing and monitoring, the internet of things, etc. These activities investigate the promises and expectations of emerging technologies, explore the unintended consequences of novel inventions and develop strategies for mitigating them.
